County Age Groups March 2011

With County age group swimming championships attracting a larger entry than in the last few years the Newquay swimmers had to pull out all the stops. The performance had to be above the norm to make the medal podium.

Leading the pursuance of gold was James Allinson who captured 5 gold and 3 silver on his way to being crowned top 11 year old boy in the County.

9 year old Erin Caff also had a great championships collecting 2 gold 2 silver and 2 bronze.

The overall performance of the two youngsters was outstanding.

Cameron Russell added to the gold total and is proving himself as the fastest sprinter in the county at senior level.

9 year old Ryan Hewitt collected 1 silver and 1 bronze and with only a short preparation made the result more pleasing.

Jordan Holroyd 3 silver and 4 bronze in the 12 years age group and there was a handful of bronze medals for 10 year old Dillon Bygrave.

Hayden Yewen, who was not 9 till the final day of the championship meant that he is the youngest competitor, took silver in the 200 medley, one of the toughest events.

Phil Goldman the Newquay coach said that the results were very encouraging and it should be noted the massive number of personal best performances that never made the medals by the whole team should be applauded

He added "As we are always looking to improve our training strategy I am in the middle of reviewing the programme and will be submitting an improved plan next week to be implemented after Easter, so that all swimmers can obtain the correct level of training that they require."

It might be an interesting point to the people of Newquay to know that the club pays around £30,000 a year for the use of the waterworld pool. A massive amount of money to find for a club that membership is 90%under 14 years old.

To try and help with this massive commitment the club is having their first ever Open meet which it is hope will help with the funds required to meet there ever increasing bills .

Anyone who would like to sponsor a race or help with the fund raising should contact the secretary on 01637 876030

Joseph who is 16 years old still has two more years as junior and is already sending shock waves through the sport that he has arrived .

He gained 1 gold 2 silver and 1 bronze at the Championships at his first appearance.

It was not just the medals that he claimed but the manner of how he claimed them, with massive personal best times in all his events. The 200 metres freestyle is his target event at World level and that he has now improved from 2:27.0 to 2:11.0. The European qualifying time at present is 2:07.0

Coach Phil Goldman said that Joseph had only been with him since 1st September and had made an impact on the world scene in just a few months .
He added that if he continues to improve at the rate he is doing then he could have an outside chance of making London 2012.

His target is to be in the training programme but his major goal is to be a medalist in Rio in 2016 when he will be at the right age of 20 .

It is not usually possible to reach that level in less than 4 years; Joseph has a remarkable will to train and that has helped speed up his improvement

"I just blasted it as Phil said and we were both aware that I would get home.

The idea was to demoralize the opposition over the first 60 meters and hang in knowing I had the back end to hold it"

Jon has been invited to open the new £25 million Truro Health Park that has been developed on the old City hospital site, Infirmary Hill on the 21st September 2010.
