IPC Swimming European
Championships 2009 Day 6 Saturday 24 October 2009 - Jonathan Fox
gold medal and European record in the men’s S7 100m Backstroke!
The British Gas Disability Swimming
Team signed off from the IPC Swimming European Championships with
a total of 39 gold, 32 silver and 23 bronze medals to top the
medal table.
On the final day of competition
the British Gas swimmers won six gold, six silver and three bronze
medals with the gold medallists consisting of the men’s
34 point relay team, Jonathan Fox, Sam Hynd, the women’s
34 point relay team, Louise Watkin and Nyree Lewis.
The women’s 34 point 4x100m
Freestyle relay saw the British Gas team, which consisted of Stephanie
Millward, Eleanor Simmonds, Lauren Steadman and Louise Watkin,
smash the European record by sixteen seconds.
Millward got the team off to an
excellent start and Simmonds looked impressive throughout her
leg as she put the team within the grasp of the record.
Steadman powered through the water
on the penultimate leg and Watkin anchored the team and brought
them home in a time of 4:35.45.
“It is really amazing to
have won that race,” Steadman said. “We all worked
really hard as a team. We had heard what the boys had done and
it really inspired us out there. We were racing the clock for
a lot of that race but we got the European record and next we
will look at the world record.”
The silver medal was won by Russia
in 4:52.18 and Germany won bronze in 4:56.78.
Jonathan Fox concluded his individual
swimming programme with a gold medal and a European record in
the men’s S7 100m Backstroke. Fox swam a perfectly timed
race and led the field early on. He had a strong turn and extended
his lead through the final 50m. The British Gas swimmer lowered
his own European record after touching the wall in a time of 1:12.48.
“I just went out there tonight
wanting to do my best and I got a two second personal best,”
Fox said. “I am really pleased with the time. I tried to
go for the world record but I am really proud of what I have done
and I am really proud to represent the team here.”
Silver was won by Mihovil Spanja
(Croatia) in 1:14.10 and the bronze medal went to Dino Sinovcic
(Croatia) in 1:17.80.
The British Gas team secured all
places on the podium for the third time in the competition in
the men’s SM8 200m Individual Medley.
It was Sam Hynd that took the gold
after putting in an excellent Breaststroke leg to take the lead
and showed his skill to extend it through the Freestyle.
Hynd touched in a time of 2:28.18
and said “This is an absolutely fantastic feeling to have
everyone on the podium. We all raced really well and it felt great
having everyone sing the national anthem too.
“That was a great finish
for me and I couldn’t really ask for anymore. Having that
gold medal around your neck, the rose in your hand and the national
anthem playing is just something else. I can’t really explain
the feelings you have when you are on the top of the podium.”
It was Richard Howard that took
the silver medal in a time of 2:32.17 and Thomas Young won the
bronze in 2:34.34.
The men’s 34 point 4x100m
Freestyle relay saw the British Gas team seal an excellent gold
medal. Matthew Walker, Graham Edmunds, Jonathan Fox and Robert
Welbourn fought to secure the victory and were pushed all the
way by the Spanish team.
Through the final 50m Welbourn
was challenged but held his nerve and kept his head down to touch
the wall in a time of 3:58.50.
“The good thing about this
team is that we are always up for the big events,” Edmunds
said. “We lost Dave Roberts through injury and that meant
that Jonathan Fox had to step in and he more than proved himself
this week with his excellent performances.
“It is always brilliant hearing
the national anthem and it was great hearing all of the supporters
singing it with us.”
The silver medal went to Spain
in 4:00.00 and Ukraine won the bronze in 4:02.26.
Louise Watkin won her fourth European
title in the women’s S9 100m Freestyle after beating team-mate
Stephanie Millward to the touch.
Watkin turned in second place and
it was Millward that benefitted from a strong turn and moved into
the lead ahead of her team-mate.
But Watkin showed an excellent
back end to the race to take the victory on the wall as she finished
in 1:03.44.
“This is the best gold that
I have won this week,” Watkin said. “This was the
one that I was really hoping for. This morning didn’t go
to plan but after some rest it went much better this evening.”
Millward won the silver in a time
of 1:03.65 and the bronze went to Sarai Gascon Moreno (Spain)
in a time of 1:04.87. Lauren Steadman finished in fifth place
in 1:07.24.
Nyree Lewis became European Champion
in the women’s S6 100m Backstroke after swimming excellently
to take her first title of the competition.
Lewis was behind for the first
25m but pulled it back just before the 50m mark and she capitalised
on a strong turn to put more distance between herself and the
field.
Lewis touched in a time of 1:27.33
which was six seconds ahead of the swimmer in second place.
“I am really pleased with
that performance,” Lewis said. “It has been a really
long week waiting for this and I really wanted to get in there
and prove that I can come back from last year and get the times
this year.”
Anastasia Diordorova (Russia) won
the silver in 1:33.68 and bronze went to Julia Castello Farre
(Spain) in 1:36.55. Elizabeth Johnson finished in fifth place
in 1:42.90.
Heather Frederiksen and Emma Hollis
won the silver and bronze respectively in the women’s SM8
200m Individual Medley. Frederiksen finished in 2:48.07 and Hollis
touched in 3:06.72. Charlotte Henshaw finished in fourth in 3:09.71.
Anthony Stephens finished his European
Championships with silver in the men’s S5 200m Freestyle.
Stephens swam well and touched in 2:42.22.
Lauren Hobbins won her second medal
of the competition in the women’s S13 100m Freestyle in
a time of 1:06.49.
Jim Anderson finished his European
campaign in the men’s S2 50m Backstroke and swam to the
silver medal in a time of 1:10.34.
On his medal Anderson said: “I
am really pleased to have won that. I was quite down after my
performance last night but this has brought me right back up.”
In a race that saw two swimmers
tie for the gold medal, British Gas swimmer Robert Welbourn won
the bronze medal. Competing in the men’s S10 100m Freestyle,
Welbourn touched home in 54.91. Graham Edmunds finished in fifth
place in 55.29.
Sascha Kindred finished in fourth
in the men’s S6 100m Backstroke in a time of 1:22.21.
Head Coach Lars Humer commented
on his team’s performance throughout the competition: “It
was great to finish the event with the two relay performances.
This has been a great result for all of us and it was down to
a real team effort.
“What was really pleasing
is that we had a crop of youngsters that stood up here and did
a good job but we also saw good performances from some of our
other athletes too.
“We achieved the medal target
that was agreed with UK Sport and that is down to the support
we receive from them and our other partners.
“We are aware that the whole
of Europe is moving on but we finished on the top of the medal
table which shows that we are keeping ahead of the developments.
Looking forward we need to make sure that our rate of improvement
is as good as everyone else’s.”
British Gas swimmer Matthew Whorwood
summed up the evening’s performance. “The evening
went very well for us,” Whorwood said. “The Ukraine
team had a really good start to the night but we really worked
hard and brought it back and had a one, two and three half way
through the night. I think some of the swimmers may be a little
disappointed but we managed to bring it back. I am really proud
of my team-mates tonight.”

to win.
"It is so great to have won
that. I have moved on from Beijing because I have come here and
won four gold medals instead of the two."

Swimming European Championships second day
- Matt Whorwood wins a second Bronze in the 100m Breaststroke
The British Gas Disability Swimming
team added eleven medals to their already impressive medal tally
after some strong performance on the second day of competition
at the IPC Swimming European Championships.
The Brits sealed an impressive
gold and silver in the women’s SB6 100m Breaststroke as
Charlotte Henshaw won her first European title.
Henshaw was pushed all the way
to her victory by team-mate Liz Johnson and after they both got
off to good starts they were swimming stroke for stroke at the
25m mark but Henshaw started to move ahead as they approached
the wall.
After the turn Henshaw had a small
advantage over the world record holder and dug in to extend it
through the final quarter of the race.
Henshaw finished in 1:40.50 to
win her gold medal and Johnson touched in 1:41.36 to take the
silver.
“I lowered my personal best
this morning,” Henshaw said. “It hasn’t really
sunk in yet that I have won but I am really happy to have won
it because it has been a long time coming.
“I have moved back to Nottingham
and that has really helped me because I am more relaxed and it
helped me bring out that performance today.”
Johnson commented: “I am
disappointed for Mark [Skimming], who is my new coach, because
he has worked so hard to include me in the programme in Bath.
But I know that I did everything that he asked and I couldn’t
thank him more. However, I couldn’t have got the medal if
I hadn’t got the work under my belt with Billy [Pye].”
The bronze medal went to Ukraine’s
Oksana Khrul in 1:47.82.
Multi Paralympic medallist Louise
Watkin became European Champion for the first time in the women’s
SM9 200m Individual Medley.
It was Spain’s Sarai Gascon
Moreno that went out fastest from the start but Watkin swam an
excellent Breaststroke leg to pull back some of the lead.
The British Gas Swimmer’s
turn onto Freestyle was excellent as she took over the lead and
she showed her strength to push ahead and win the gold in a time
of 2:38.52.
Poland’s Paulina Kamilla
Wozniak won the silver in 2:40.85 and Emilie Gral (France) won
bronze in 2:41.27. Brits Kate Grey and Lauren Steadman finished
in fifth and sixth respectively. Grey touched in 2:44.22 and Steadman
finished in 2:46.40.
Anthony Stephens swam impressively
to take the gold medal in the men’s S5 50m Butterfly and
broke the British record along on the way.
Stephens showed his strength from
the start and although he was behind at the half way point he
fought hard and dug deep as he touched the wall first to take
the gold in a new personal best time of 42.15.
“That was really unexpected,”
Stephens said. “My main event is the 200m Freestyle and
so to get the title in this event is great.
“I have never been European
Champion before and to hear the national anthem was brilliant.
We changed my stroke technique just last week and it really seems
to have paid off here.”
The silver went to Spain’s
Ricardo Ten Argiles in 42.79 and team-mate Xavier Torres Rami
won the bronze in 47.04.
Sascha Kindred and Thomas Young
did battle for the medals in the men’s SB7 200m Individual
Medley.
Young, who is competing at his
first international competition, got off to a good start and was
on the world record holder’s shoulder up to the 40m mark.
European silver medallist Young
moved ahead of Kindred just before the turn and although they
both enjoyed strong turns it was Young that remained ahead.
But after a disqualification for
a technical infringement Kindred took the title in a time of 1:24.15
with Iaroslav Semenenko (Ukraine) winning silver in 1:29.50.
Bronze went to Rusian Sadvaksov
(Russia) in 1:32.70.
Eleni Papadopoulos, who won her
first major international medal yesterday, went into the final
of the women’s SM10 200m Individual Medley looking confident.
Papadopoulos knew team-mate Emma
Cattle and Elodie Lorandi (France) would put up tough competition.
Lorandi secured the gold medal
in the final 10m and touched home in a time of 2:42.19 and Papadopoulos
won her second silver of the competition after finishing in 2:43.57.
“I am really shocked,”
Papadopoulos said. “I thought I was in third and I looked
at the score board and I saw that it said second. I went into
it ranked third and came out with silver and a personal best which
is great.
“To have medalled in my two
main events is a real boost for me. My confidence is really growing
at the moment and I am really happy.”
The bronze was won by Nina Ryabova
(Russia) in 2:44.18 and British Gas swimmer Emma Cattle touched
in 2:45.99 in sixth place.
Emma Hollis, who is making her
European Championship debut, took an impressive silver medal in
the women’s SB7 100m Breaststroke.
Lisa Den Braber (Holland) took
the lead early on and dominated the race and she had the gold
medal secured after touching in 1:34.57.
Hollis touched in 1:43.29 to knock
two seconds off her British record and win the silver medal.
The bronze went to Germany’s
Annika Geller in 1:56.06.
Paralympic Champion Robert Welbourn
lowered the British record on his way to winning bronze in the
men’s SM10 200m Individual Medley.
Welbourn started the race well
but as the race entered the final 50m he lay in fourth and knew
he had to work hard to secure a medal.
He showed his power through the
Freestyle leg and touched home in third place and lowered his
British record to 2:19.36.
“That was pretty good,”
Welbourn said. “I do the IM as a way to get the meet started
for me, to get a race under my belt. I came into the event ranked
in third but there are a few of us that are really close and you
never know what is going to happen so I never really expected
it.”
The new European Champion is Lucas
Ludwig of Germany after he stopped the clock in a new European
record time of 2:15.95. The silver medallist is Sven Decaesstecker
(Belgium) in 2:17.73.
European bronze medallist Matthew
Whorwood won his second bronze medal of the competition after
putting in an excellent performance in the men’s SB6 100m
Breaststroke.
Whorwood swam a well timed race
as he moved up the field in the final 50m to take the bronze medal
in a time of 1:31.91.
Croatia’s Milhovil Spanja
won the gold ahead of Germany’s Christoph Burkard who won
the silver medal. Spanja finished in 1:27.46 and Burkard touched
in 1:27.56.
Claire Cashmore won her first medal
of the Championships in the women’s SB6 100m Breaststroke
after finishing in third place in a race that knocked three seconds
off the world record.
Cashmore fought hard and secured
her bronze after finishing in 1:23.61 just 0.12 seconds off silver
medal position.
The new world record holder is
Olesya Vladykina (Russia) and she won the gold in 1:17.60. The
silver medal went to Paulina Kamila Wozniak (Poland) in 1:23.53.
European Champions James Anderson
won bronze in the men’s S2 200m Freestyle to add to the
gold medal that he won in the 50m Freestyle.
At the half way point Anderson
was behind the field but showed a good back end to the race and
he moved up to third place.
Anderson won the bronze in 5:10.49
with Itzhak Mamistvalov (Israel) winning the race in 5:06.67 and
Dmitry Kokarev (Russia) taking bronze in 5:07.67.
David Hill finished just outside
of the medals in the men’s SM9 200m Individual Medley after
finishing in sixth place in a time of 2:30.36.
In the women’s SB13 saw Lauren
Hobbins finish in eighth place overall after touching home in
a time of 1:30.96.
The men’s SB8 100m Breaststroke
saw both Sam Hynd and Richard Howard finish outside of the medals.
Hynd finished in sixth place in 1:15.44.
Head Coach Lars Humer enjoyed seeing
another successful day in the pool: “We saw a lot of personal
bests today from a lot of athletes which shows progression and
for us that is really important.
“One of the things we worked
hard on in the last quadrennial was the development of the race
and we are seeing the benefit of that here. The finishing of a
lot of races has been really strong and we are winning the really
close races which is great.
“We are also seeing a lot
of youngsters coming through which is really good. Emma [Hollis],
Eleni [Papadopoulos] and Thomas [Young] have worked really hard
and performed really well. Charlotte [Henshaw] is another athlete
that has showed a lot of promise through the last quadrennial
and it is beginning to show through.”

BRITISH GAS TEAM
GET EUROPEAN CAMPAIGN OFF TO STRONG START 18 Oct 2009 at
the IPC
Swimming European Championships in Reykjavik
with Jon Fox Striking Gold in the 400m Free and
Matt Whorwood coming home with a bronze
The British Gas Disability Swimming team
that are competing at the IPC Swimming European Championships
in Reykjavik enjoyed success on day one of competition as they
won four gold, four silver and three bronze medals.
Double Paralympic Champion Eleanor
Simmonds dominated the final of the women’s S6 400m Freestyle
as she won her first European title.
Simmonds lay down a marker to the
rest of the field in this morning’s heats as she took charge
her heat after putting in a good performance. Paralympic medallists
Natalie Jones and Nyree Lewis also secured their places in the
final after swimming strongly in their heats.
In the final, Simmonds went out
quickly and she looked strong throughout the race but found Jones
on her shoulder for the first 50m. Simmonds got into her rhythm
and took out the lead over her team-mate.
At the 100m mark, Simmonds and
Jones lay in one and two and Lewis lay in fourth place behind
Sarah Louise Rung (Norway). Simmonds touched home in a time of
5:37.31 to win the gold medal and secure her first European title.
“I am really happy to have the title and the gold medal,”
Simmonds said. “But I did want to go faster in my final
because I felt really good in my heat this morning.".
“I did know I was in the lead but I race better when I have
someone pushing me along but it was good to win the race by that
much.”
Jones continued to show her strength
and finished in a new personal best time of 5:54.77 to win the
silver medal. The battle for bronze was won by Rung in a time
of 5:55.54 and Lewis finished in fourth in 6:06.75.
Jones commented: “That was
a seven second personal best for me which is just great. The first
100m I was feeling it and I had pins and needles but I just told
myself to push on and get through it. I am really pleased with
the silver, I am so happy.”
One of the closest fought races
of the night was the final of the men’s S7 400m Freestyle
and it saw Jonathan Fox take on Croatia’s Mihovil Spanja.
Both athletes got excellent starts but it was the British Gas
swimmer that touched in first place at the 50m mark. But Spanja
pulled it back to take over the lead at the next turn. The next
200m saw Fox on Spanja’s shoulder as the two athletes fought
to get an advantage over their rival. It was in the final 100m
that the athletes were swimming stroke for stroke and Fox turned
first for the final 50m. Fox touched in a time of 4:56.18 to take
the gold medal and Spanja finished in second in a time of 4:56.54.
“That was a tough race and
winning the gold medal has left me a bit speechless,” Fox
said. “I just wanted to get out there and give it a bash.
I got a good start and went out there fast and just tried to hold
on to my speed. “It worked for me and I feel really proud
and happy to have won the title.”
The bronze medal went to Nikolas
Tsotras (Greece) in 5:17.41. Stephanie Millward put in a commanding
performance in the final of the women’s S9 100m Butterfly
as she swam close to her European record to win the gold medal.
Millward swam an excellent first
50m and turned ahead of the field. Her team-mates Claire Cashmore
and Elizabeth Simpkin also swam well through the first 50m but
Spain’s Sarai Gascon Moreno lay in second place as the race
entered the final length.Millward secured the gold medal with
a time of 1:10.78 just 0.17 seconds outside of her personal best.
“It was a good swim but a
really tough race for me physically,” Millward said. “I
went into the race worrying about the other competitors and when
you let those doubts in you know it won’t necessarily go
to plan.“But it was good although it would have been nice
to have broken my European record but maybe another day. I am
ecstatic to be champion.”
Cashmore turned in third place
but found the speed too much and dropped through the field to
fifth as she touched in 1:15.35. Simpkin swam an impressive final
50m as she moved up to third place and as she stopped the clock
on 1:13.58 to win the bronze medal.“I felt really good in
the final,” Simpkin said. “My heat was really bad
and I was really disappointed with my performance but I went back
to the hotel and picked myself up ready for the final.
“My third 25m in my heat
was my worst and so I went into the final knowing that I had to
improve it. So I hit that third 25m and went quicker and held
it for the fourth. I really believed in myself for that final
and that really helped me.”
Gascon Moreno won the silver medal
in a time of 1:10.88. Jim Anderson started his European campaign
well after winning the gold medal in the men’s S5 50m Freestyle.
Anderson didn’t get the best
start but his experience showed through as he moved into the lead
in the final 25m and secured his first gold medal in five years
with a time of 1:09.24.“I feel wonderful,” Anderson
said. “I didn’t get a great start but I knew I just
had to go for it after that and I managed to pull it back.
“I want more gold medals
from the rest of this competition.”The silver medal went
to Poland’s Jacek Czech in 1:09.59 and the bronze was won
by Russia’s Dmitry Kokarev in 1:09.61
Anthony Stephens swam close to
his British record in the men’s S5 50m Freestyle on his
way to winning the silver medal. Stephens swam a powerful race
and he touched home in time of 34.87 to secure his silver medal.
“That wasn’t my best
swim because I was aiming to lower my personal best,” Stephens
said. “My heat was quicker than my final which made me think
I was going to go quicker in the final.“I am happy with
the medal and it is great to get the competition off to such a
good start. I am happy to have won silver in an event that isn’t
my main event.”
Sebastian Rodriguez Veloso (Spain)
won the gold medal in a time of 33.88 and the bronze medal went
to Hayri Simsek (France) in 36.51.
Eleni Papadopoulos, who is competing
in her first major international competition, put in an impressive
performance in the final of the women’s S10 100m Butterfly
to win the silver medal.Papadopoulos moved into second place after
the first 25m and knew she just had to keep her paceup to ensure
her place on the podium.
The British Gas swimmer worked
hard over the final 50m and secured her silver medal in a time
of 1:13.82. Papadopoulos said after her race: “I am really
chuffed with myself. I had a really good time in the race and
I have been feeling really strong over the past few days. I have
three more races to come this week and I am feeling really good
for them. “I am so motivated at the moment and I am really
pleased to have come to my first major international and won a
medal.”
The gold medal was won by Elodie
Lorandi (France) in a time of 1:10.89 and the bronze medal went
to Anna Omielan (Poland) in 1:16.43. .The men’s S8 100m
Backstroke saw two British Gas swimmers fight it out for medals
alongsideRussia’s Konstantin Lisenkov.
It was Lisenkov that had the better
start but out the Brits Sean Fraser went out fastest. Thomas Young
stole Fraser’s British record with an impressive heat swim
so Fraser was out to take it back.Fraser turned ahead of Young
at the 50m mark but Young brought it back through the final 25m
ashe touched in second place behind Lisenkov in a new British
record time of 1:08.48.
“I am feeling pretty good
after that,” Young said. “I had a down spell around
last year’s Paralympics because I didn’t qualify and
it knocked me. But I moved to Manchester and I now work with Mick
[Massey] and I feel stronger and I have learnt from the mistakes
I made last year.“You never know what is going to happen
and so going into the final I just knew that I had a good chance
of getting a medal after my heat swim and I just wanted to go
for it. I am very happy to havewon my first major medal.”
Fraser finished in third place
just outside of his personal best time after touching in 1:09.52.Lisenkov
took the gold medal in 1:07.10.Double Paralympic bronze medallist
Matt Whorwood won bronze in the men’s S6 400m Freestyle
after putting in a strong performance to lower the British record
through the race.
Whorwood got an excellent start
and looked on course to break the British record early on. At
the 100m mark the Brit lay in third place and although he faced
an early challenge from Germany’s Swen Michaelis he proved
too strong and drew out his lead.Anders Olsson had the gold medal
sealed at 150m and so the battle was on for second place here
Whorwood took on Ireland’s Darragh McDonald.
It was McDonald that took the silver
from the Brit after touching in 5:15.07 while Whorwood took bronze
in the new record time of 5:16.67. “It was nice to get my
personal best,” Whorwood said. “I have been trying
to lower that for a while. This is my first major meet with my
new coach Billy [Pye] and it was good to see how we worked here.
“I went into the final ranked
in third place and won bronze with a new British record there
isn’t much more I can ask for. I did feel close to second
but he just had a bit more than me. But it is still early into
our cycle for 2012 and I won the first medal for the team which
is great.”Olsson lowered his own world record and won the
gold after finishing in 4:47.75.
The British Gas swimmers competing
in the men’s S10 100m Butterfly finished outside of the
medals as they pushed to put in strong performances.Robert Welbourn
took fourth place in the tough race as he touched home in 1:01.97
while Graham Edmunds finished in eighth in a time of 1:05.69.
To sum up the first day of competition
Head Coach Lars Humer said: “That has been a good day for
us. Medal-wise we got as many as we would have expected because
of the rankings. But more importantly we were seeing a lot of
personal bests and season bests and it is great to have a first
day like this.
“The team will take
a lot away from the day and after seeing such good races like
Jonathan Fox’s which was such a close race I know it will
install a lot of confidence in the team.”

which was held at Penzance Leisure Centre. Newquay Cormorants
had a fair crop of swimmers who entered the event and there was
some very good individual performances.
Jordan Horoyd gave a sparkling
performance with 3 gold and 3 silver medals from her 6 race programme.
The young 11 year old put her marker down to show her intent come
the county age group championships in March. She showed a lot
of maturity for one so young and like a good wine will get even
better with age! Head Coach [Phil Goldman] said "Jordan has
had her work cut out to step up to the next level in the last
4 weeks and it has already had a positive effect on her performances.
By the time we reach the county championships she will have had
a full training macro cycle and her improvement will be major".
There were gold medal performances
from Brogan Parsons who for the first time broke through the 1.20
barrier in the 100 meters breaststroke, and had several other
medal winning performances.
Cameron Russell is establishing himself as the fastest male in
the county with an excellent gold medal swim in the 50 meters
freestyle with a time a fraction outside his National time for
next year he has set his target of making the National final next
August .
Jarrad Benny also showed he was
looking for big improvement in March with personal best times
in all his events including a gold medal swim in the 200 meters
fly. Phil said the personal best performances now are telling
that Jarrad is on a big upward curve.
Little Jack Simmonds grabbed a
clutch of silver and bronze and showed why he is a Mr Reliable!
There were also some good first time swims from a number of swimmers
having their first competition.

Club coach [Phil Goldman] said
"Ben had swam in his most competitive arena ever and and
did himself, Great Britain and Newquay proud. He had a massive
program and during it he had to see the Physiotherapist with a
shoulder niggle. On reflection I feel that he should look towards
cutting down to a one event a day plus relay schedule in future".
Ben will next compete at the National
Youth Championships at Sheffield where he will be joined by Newquay's

pm
the Bergameister (mayor) of the town contacted coach Phil Goldman
requesting that he bring the boy that broke the World Record to
the Town Hall. At the town hall in the Bergameisters Office Ben
was asked to sign the Golden Book a very old leather bound book
that holds the signatures of persons that have historical records
of note. Photgraphs were taken and we are now part of a historical
record of the town. Such was the Cormorants impact on the event
they have received invites to Portugal, Hungary U.S.A, Israel

& the Counties...
With the Cormorants swimmers competing
on two different fronts over the weekend the stage was set for
the Fox boys with paralympian Jonathan at the D.S.E. British Junior
Swimming Championships at Sheffield, and younger brother 15 year
old Frazer at the Cornwall Counties second weekend of the Swimming
Championships.
Jonathan was in outstanding form
after his recent injury and took gold in all four events he competed
in, smashing the World records in both the 50 and 100 meters backstroke.
He added two lifetime best in the 50 and 100 meters freestyle
to enter the world top six rankings in both.
Younger brother Frazer added the
100 and 200 meters Junior County freestyle titles to his 400 and
800 meters titles from last week, again re-writing the county
records book.
Jarrad Benney was also in excellent
shape adding the 400 I.M. County Junior title to his 200 fly title,
and as a late developer is starting to show his potential. Coach
Phil Goldman said that the development and improvement of the
15 to 19 years boy's age range is very pleasing and he puts the
strength of this down to the the influence of the paralympic training
programme that the boys are accessing.
Ben Procter added a new British Record in the 200 meters freestyle
and a European record in the 100 meters freestyle for the S14
disability class, and looks towards the Global Games in July as
his main goal.
Natalie Harbisher completely dominated
the County Senior and Junior 200 meters butterfly with a massive
swim, and had taken the gold and put it away before the silver
medalist had finished such was her dominance.
In the age groups of the same event
Newquay showed their strength with Millie Sander 11 yrs &
Emily Harbisher 12 yrs both taking gold, with Jordan Holroyd in
the 10 yrs claiming silver.
The final medal in the event went to 14 yr old Charlotte Scotland
in in her first attempt at the 200 fly. She swam the race of her
life to take the Senior and Junior bronze medal and looks a fine
prospect for the future in the event.
Brogan Parsons produced a massive
personal best in claiming a Championship 100 meters breaststroke
bronze and gave a performance that will threaten the opposition
in Germany where she competes in the 14 yrs age group in ten days
time.
The brothers Angus and Dylon Scotney
also got among the age group medals in the 50 metrers breast with
Dylon gaining gold, and Angus the bronze in the 12yrs and 10 years
ages respectively.
Jack Semmonds in the 11 years age band added to the medal haul
with a silver performance with a positive swim to bring the County
Championships to a close. Emily Harbisher showed her class in
the 100 meters 12 years age group breaststroke with a gold medal
performance of maturity beyond her years.
Jessica Keast who was up in Sheffield
with Jon Fox contributed to the very successful weekend with a
10 second improvement in time in the 50 meters backstroke, taking
gold in the S5 disability class. Her main target is the European
trials and international long course British Championships in
May.

Jon and
Ben Smash World and British Records at the County Champs!...
The Cormorants picked up a good
quota of medals in the first half of the county swimming championships
held at Penzance and Bodmin over the weekend, (28th Feb-1st Mar).
Many of the performances of the team were very impressive in accumulating
10 Gold 17 Silver and 6 Bronze medal swims.
Jonathan Fox was in Record breaking
form taking the World and British record of 11 times Paralympic
gold medallist Dave Roberts in the 50 meters backstroke class
S7.
Ben Procter took second place in
the 100 meters Men's Championship and in so doing smashed the
World record for the event for Disability class S14 and added
the British record in the 50 meters backstroke.
Pascal Latham S14 and Jessica Keast
S5 SB4 also produced life time bests in gaining gold in their
respective events.
Jonathan and Jessica are at the
D S E National Junior Short Course next weekend representing the
South West in Sheffield.
Emily Harbisher was in dominant
mood collecting 5 golds and 3 silver from the 8 events she contested.
Her best performances came in the multi stroke events where she
completely outshone the opposition in both the 200 and 400 meters
12 years age band.
Jordan Holroyd in the 10 years
age group has improved alarmingly with a super 200 back gold medal
performance some three and a half seconds inside last years winning
time. The young lady added 2 Silver and a Bronze to her growing
collection.
11 year old Millie Sander collected
gold in the 400 meters I.M. with a time that says 'National Swimmer'
for the event in the future. She also gained a pair of Silver
and a pair of bronze medals for the mantelpiece.
Frazer Fox took the 400 meters
freestyle Junior title( 15 AND UNDER) and was second in the Junior
50 meters free both times will take him to the South West Regions
Championships later in the year.
Team mate Cameron Russell took
the 50 meters Junior title with a very aggressive swim making
it a one two in the event. Cameron also has a date at the Regional
Champs and is looking to medal .
The final gold winning performance
of the weekend was produced by 11 year old Jack Semmonds who had
an inspired swim in the 200 meters breaststroke and gave a clean
pair of heels to his opposition .
Natalie Harbisher and Ellen Jenkin
also made the medal table. Natalie gained 3 silvers in the 14
and overs, and Ellen bronze in the 200 meters free in a time that
would have won last year's 10 yrs event.
Angus Scotney captured 2 silver
and 1 bronze in the 10 years age band, brother Dylon gained 2
silver in the 12 years group. There was silver for Jarrad Benney
in the 200 meters Junior Championship and bronze for Joss Boylan
in the 50 meters freestyle.

County
Swimming Championships - A Great start for the Cormorants...!
The county swimming championships
got off to a very positive start for the Newquay Cormorants with
just nine entries in the long distance events they climbed the
podium 9 times collecting 6 gold and 3 silver, and put down a
marker to the rest of the county.
In the individual events there
was a double gold for both Millie Sander (11 years), and Emily
Harbisher (12 years), in both the 800 meters and 1500 meters events.
In the latter both created new competition records!
Frazer Fox came out of the shadows
of his brother, the Paralympian silver medalist Jon, in taking
gold in the 800 meters Junior Championship in his first major
race at this distance.
Natalie Harbisher picked up the
sixth medal in the individual events, taking silver in the 800
meters .
All four swimmers claimed their
place at the South West Regional Championships with the times
they recorded.
The sixth gold medal came from
the males 15 to 18 years age group in the 4 x 200 freestyle team,
the quartet of Frazer Fox, Callum Roberts, Ben Procter and Jarrod
Benney, who won an exciting race by just 7 tenths of a second
from the favorites for the event, City of Truro. The boys gave
in every case a super team performance knocking lumps of time
off anything they had done previously.
The 13 and under team sporting
three 12 year olds Emily Harbisher, Emily Andrew, Ellie Vercoe
and 11 year old Millie Sander, produced a fine team performance
in taking silver behind the much older Truro team. Coach Phil
Goldman said that the youngsters did us proud and are all young
enough to swim together in the event next year with a favorites
chance.
Not to be over phased by their
younger team mates, the Girls 14 to 17 years age group also took
silver with the quartet of Rhiannon Jones, Brogan Parsons, Charlotte
Scotland and Natalie Harbisher who will have another three years
in the age band together.
The full county championship programme gets under way on the weekends
of February 28th and March 7th .
March is a busy month for the
Cormorants, including a competition in Germany from March 19th
to 23rd in which they have 13 swimmers competing in a international
club competition some 200 kilometers south of Frankfurt in Bad
Bergzabern.

Cormorants
are Junior Champions of Cornwall!
The Newquay Cormorants Juniors
covered themselves in glory with one of the best displays of league
swimming in the past 20 years of Junior League history.
Phil Goldman [head coach] said
"It was the smallest team I have ever coached for the event,
but what they lacked in squad numbers was made up for with sheer
quality."
"We went into the event with
the bare minimum but in every age group of the team they performed
with quality and grit."
The Junior League Champions of
Cornwall is the most prestigious competition in Cornwall for team
swimming for youngsters 9 yrs to 12yrs age groups.
The winning performance broke
the strangle hold that City of Truro had on the Junior League
Championship which they had won for the last 5 years.

turn around with Truro on last years league results to run out
comfortable winners by 21 points

Thoughts From
Matt Whorwood On His Return From The Paralympics....
An inspiration to a dream. That is what the past
four years of my life were like. As I eagerly watched my fellow
team mates performances at the 2004 Athens Paralympics it made me
realise it was there, in 2008 where I wanted to be. Four years of
hard work is most often the bit which the media do not focus much
upon. It is only the few short moments of such an event like a Paralympics
which the nationwide audiences view.
I could talk to you about all of the sacrifices, the changes to
lifestyle and the hard grind four years can play on an athlete's
life to achieve a few short moments on the world's stage. However,
it is those few short moments what the work is all for and so I
will talk to you about them.
Beijing, the 2008 Paralympics. The best athletes from all around
the world gathering to compete at one venue, and what a venue it
was... China certainly put on an immense show throughout the whole
Paralympic experience. Thousands of volunteers were continuously
offering their help and services to ensure everyone's needs were
met. As for the pool itself, it was fantastic. I had never seen
so many people in one place before, let alone spectators to see
me (and a few other people of course) perform. Racing in front of
such a massive audience is an experience which will stay with me
for the rest of my life. For all you land-lovers, the bird's nest
stadium was equally spectacular. Personally I was only granted the
opportunity to go into this impressive structure for the closing
ceremony but alike the racing that too will always stay with me.
There is so much to tell from a Paralympics I can clearly see why
so many athletes can write books on their memories.
A Paralympic games is definitely an experience
of a lifetime and for all of those budding London 2012 Paralympians
reading this I have one message for you; four years of training
for a few short moments are definitely worth it.
Cornwall County
Disability Awareness Day
Newquay Cormorants took time out from the pool
to exhibit at the Cornwall County Disability Awareness Day. The
event was held at the Royal Cornwall Showground in Wadebridge and
attracted around 50 exhibitors. It provided a very informative day
for all. Pictured at the stand is Jessica Keast, one of the disabled
swimmers that train with and represent the Newquay club.
In attendance at the stand were club Chairman
and his wife Ron and June Fullwood, Club Secretary Chris Jepson,
Club Coach Phil Goldman, Jessica Keast and family. Phil Goldman
said "It was a very good project that the County Council had
put on, and is something that should be an annual event as there
was so much positive feedback from the day. From the club's point
of view, I feel we were able to portray for the remainder of the
swimming clubs in the county what we can offer".

An Octet of
Golds for Ben at Sheffield While Jon Fox Gets His First Race After
Beijing!
Eighteen year old Ben Procter led the charge
for glory with a perfect 8 at the D.S.E .British Short Course Championships
at Sheffield. Ben took gold in the S14 class of the championships
in both the 50mts and 100mts free, back, butterfly, 100mts and 200mts
IM. He was also in World Record breaking form as within the octet
of gold medals he took the World Record in the 50 mts butterfly
clocking 27.56! Not satisfied with that he added European Records
in both the 100mts free 55.61 and the 100 mts IM.
Jonathan Fox had his first race since returning
from Beijing with a silver medal in the 100mts back and confirmed
his dominance in Britain for the event with a gold medal performance.
It would be easy to think he was slightly behind his performances
in Beijing, but Phil Goldman [coach] said "It is a starting
point for the plan to peak next year at the World Championships
in Brazil late in 2009. Ben is further forward than Jon in his training
as he needs to peak at the Global Games in the Czech Republic in
July. The planning seems just about correct and will see both boys
competing in the South West Regional Championships at the end of
the month.
Bodmin Open: The Two
Emilys Dominate the Competition!
Fifteen swimmers from the club competed
at the Bodmin Open Age Group and collected a fair haul of medals
totaling 10 gold 10 silver and 5 bronze. In the 11 yrs age group
the two Emilys, Harbisher and Andrew, dominated the age band taking
first and second in three of the events and Harbisher adding a further
gold and silver in the remaining two. Older sister Natalie Harbisher
took four of the five golds in her age band but was pushed into
second place by team mate Brogan Parsons in the breaststroke.
New kid on the block Calum Roberts gained his
first success at open level with a very impressive 100mts breaststroke.
Positive performances from Jarod Benney and Frazer Fox both in the
medals in good times for this part of the year show they are both
full of promise. Phil Goldman was quoted as saying "It is still
early in the year, but I am very confident that the performance
gains we are making from using the excellent pool facilities the
Trevelgue Camp site while Waterworld is closed will show at the
County Championships in March". He went on to add "...the
whole swimming world is moving on and unless clubs move with it
with good planned training programmes then they will be left behind
at all levels."

Matt Whorwood and Louise Watkin clinched bronze medals to go with
the golds won earlier by David Roberts and Eleanor Simmonds that
took Britain past its gold medal target.
Matt was third in the 400m freestyle (S6) final, a race dominated
by Sweden's Anders Olsson. Olsson led from the off to win by 19
seconds in a world record 4:48.31 while Irishman Darragh McDonald
was second. Matt stuck to his race plan to win his second bronze

Jonathan Wins
Silver in Exciting Men's 100m Backstroke !!
News from Beijing, "Young Jonathan Fox took
to the water in the final of the men’s S7 100m Backstroke
ranked as second fastest for the final and after a quick heat he
knew he would need to dig deep to pull the victory away from America’s
Lantz Lamback.
Fox looked in charge of the race at the 50m turn
as he touched first but the power of Lamback was too much for him
over the home straight and Fox finished in second place to win his
first medal of the competition and lower the European record with
a time of 1:14.34.
'I am really happy with that,” Fox said.
“I am proud of what I have achieved in that race. I didn't
think that Lamback would go so fast again this evening but I felt
good through my race and set another personal best which was great.
I am really pleased to have my first paralympic medal.
In the previous days racing, Matt came in 4th
in the 200m IM, just missing out on a Bronze.

Ben will now do some regeneration training before having some
time off.

The two Newquay Cormorants Paralympics Swimmers
Jonathan Fox and Matt Whorwood had their final prep races at the
National Youth Championships and gave all the signs they are on
track for Beijing.
The boys only competed in the events they will contest in Beijing
.
Jonathan improved his best time for 400 mts and 100 mts freestyle
by 6 seconds and 2 seconds respectively and in the 100 mts backstroke
has now logged the 4 fastest times of the year for the event.
He goes into the Beijing games as World ranked first in the 100

"With 19 days to go before they fly out to the holding camp
we will now reduce training volume and increase speed work to
bring them upto a fine racing edge with the final sprint work

Gloucester
- Best Ever Cornish Results...
[Results]
The South West Regional Swimming Sprint Competition
held at Gloucester over the weekend attracted a massive entry.
The event is open to all swimmers that qualified for the Regional
Youth and Age Group Championships and is competed for in single
age bands from 10 years to 18 years plus.
The rules of the event are to establish the overall top sprinters.
Each swimmer competes in all four 50m stroke events, and also
the 4 x 25m Individual Medley. Points are awarded in relation
to time and the winner is the person with the highest combined
total time from all 5 events.
Newquay Cormorants had 7 swimmers who had qualified and had entered
the event, but for various reasons Millie Sander 10yr, Rhiannon
Jones 14yr, and Dylan Scotney 11yr did not make the journey to
compete
The four swimmers that did get to the starting block swam outstandingly
to produce the best ever results for a Cornish club at this event
Natalie Harbisher stole the show with some very aggressive swimming
in the 14 years age group to take the gold medal, Newquay's first
for this event. The young lady was first in the butterfly with
31.60, third in the front crawl in 29.37, fourth in the breaststroke
with 38.14 and seventh in the backstroke clocking 34.01. With
confidence at an all time high she made sure of the top spot with
a third place in the finishing in 1.13.3 in the medley.
Younger sister Emily Harbisher in the 11 year old age band was
also in defiant mood and produced 5 personal best times in taking
the silver medal. The starlet was second in the breaststroke 39.72,
second in the front crawl 32.28 sixth in the butterfly 36.23 and
seventh in the backstroke 37.23. Her medley time was 1.19.02 which
gave her second in that event and consolidated her position in
the silver medal spot.
Ben Procter is one of the disability swimmer at the Cormorants
who will be competing for Great Britain in August in the European
I.N.A.S. and M.E.N.C.A.P Championships in Poland .
Competing in the able-bodied event last weekend he showed his
remarkable talent in taking overall second place in gaining the
silver medal for the 18 years and over.
Ben was first in the butterfly with 28.03 and also the backstroke
in 31.71. He added a second in both the front crawl with 26.01,
and the medley in 1.05.36. Bens weaker stroke the breast held
up well with a fifth place in 35.73 confirming his silver medal
Brogan Parsons in the 13 year old age band produced some very
good personal best times with a fourth in the breast, clocking
38.32 being her highest placing, but her swims of 35.72 fly, 37.23
back and 31.73 front crawl added up to a very impressive medley
of 1.16.90 placing her in a very respectable final position just
outside the top ten
All four will next compete at Plymouth on the weekend of 19/20
July which will be the final prep race for Ben prior to him going
out to Poland on the 15th August.
Beijing
Preparation Update....
We are now 10 weeks out from leaving the U.K
for the Beijing Paralympics games with a further 2 weeks of acclimatization
once out there.
On Tuesday of last week both Matt Whorwood and Jonathan Fox had
a 200meters step test which is a set of 7 x 200 meter freestyle
swims on a 5 minute repeat, making each one faster than the one
before by 4 seconds
Both boys performed this wel,l with Matt producing a British record
swim on the last rep which of course can not be claimed. The test
records time of swim at 100 meters and at the finish of each 200mts
heartrate, blood lactic levels their R P E (estimated level of
performance) are also logged.
The results when analysed by a Physiologist give you the condition
of the aerobic and anaerobic status of the swimmer.
Saturday the boys went over to Wales for the day to compete in
the Welsh Short Course Championships, and their performance in
the 400 meters event was a personal best time with Matt taking
the British record
The shorter events they competed in were someway below their best
which is in line with the recent tests confirming they have built
up a good aerobic base and now have to retain this and introduce
more anaerobic work and gradual speed sets.
This week the boys will be going upto around 46.000 meters in
the 17hrs planned at Waterworld and we have a clear six weeks
of work without interruption bringing us to the Manchester Aquatic
Centre for their final step test before competing in Sheffield
for the rest of the week at the National Youth Champs which will
be their final prep race before going out to Beijing 3 weeks later.
South
West Swimming Championships - Millie Makes it a Hat trick!
The first weekend of a two weekend South West
Age Group Swimming Championships brought together the cream of
age group swimmers from the six counties of the South West, and
the Newquay Cormorants had a fine weekend .
Top 10yr old county swimmer Millie Sander gave a golden performance
as Madam Butterfly! The Newquay starlet led the qualifiers into
the final with a 15 second personal best time for the 200 meters
butterfly, and in the evening final gained a standing ovation
in taking the gold medal and the South West Championship with
a further improved time of 5 seconds .
Millie also gained Silver in the 400 meters Individual Medley
chopping 9 seconds of her previous best and made it a hat trick
of best performances with a 6 second improvement in taking sixth
place in the 200 meters freestyle final.
Phil Goldman her coach said "It was more than six years ago
when Millie was only 4yrs old that we planned the capture of the
200 mts fly championship". He went on to say, "Millie
first learned to swim with me at Lake View Country Club and continued
her development with me at the Bedruthan Steps Hotel Pool, and,
at the age of seven I brought her to the Cormorants club where
she has matured into a very talented swimmer. At the end of the
journey it has been team work from parents, swimmer and myself
that has achieved the goal. We now look to a new journey, the
National scene as the target by her 13th birthday which is a realistic
goal."
Emily Harbisher who is by far the best 11 year old girl swimmer
in the county took a little time to adjust to the championships,
but rounded off the weekend with a personal best time in reaching
the 100 meters breaststroke final. With some major events to come
next week she will be pushing for medals.
13 year old Brogan Parsons, the third of the trio of Cormorant
girls achieved a personal best land mark in the 100 meters breaststroke,
but just missed the final.
11 year old Dillon Scotney was workman-like in his 100 meters
breast event, but with his training levels down for various reasons
he was up on the pace until the turn but found the last quarter
hard.
Cameron Strikes Gold at Millfield!
Cameron Russell struck gold for the Cormorants
at the Millfield pool with a super 50 meters freestyle performance
in the 14 yrs age group and looks destined for greater things
in the sprint event. Frazer Fox, the younger brother of Jonathan,
took fourth in the event and claimed silver in the 200 meters
freestyle with a massive personal best time. "Both boys performed
well beyond anything they have done before." [Coach - Phil
Goldman]
The German International Championships
in Berlin.
For Jon and Matt this was the final time they would swim for the
British Team before going out to Beijing in August.
Jon stamped his mark on the backstroke events in taking both the
200meters and 100 meters S7 Championships. In the 200 event he
smashed the existing world record by some two seconds his first
half of the race was spot on but he had a poor final turn which
cost him, but he came back over the last 50mts very strongly with
the present World Record holder Andrew Lindsey 2.6.seconds behind.
In the 100mts event Jon recorded the second fastest time ever
just 3 one hundredths of a second outside his own world record.
In second place was Fabtic Dejan of Slovenia nearly two seconds
back, and the present Paralympics Champion Andrew Lindsey in third.
Matt Whorwood was workman-like in both the 100mts breast and 400mts
free, but was a little way below his best.
Coach Phil Goldman said "Jon is now the swimmer in the backstroke
the rest of the world have to catch, but we will not rest on our
laurels. Jon and I will be working hard over the next 12 weeks
to lower the World Records in Beijing with our quest for gold."
He went on to say that Matt is currently mentally and physically
tired due to his 'A 'level
examination year for entry to university, but he will be refreshed
and at his peak performance level for the Beijing date.

The British International D.S.E.
Swimming Championships
The British International D.S.E. Swimming Championships
which were the final trials for selection to the team for the
Beijing Paralympics saw the Newquay duo of Matt Whorwood and Jonathan
Fox produced some fine performances to establish themselves as
live contenders for success in Beijing.
They were joined at the Championships by team mate Ben Procter
who with his performances has booked his place in the G.B. Team
for the I.N.A.S European Championships taking place in Poland
on August 17th to 21st.
The three boys all hit the gold trail, Ben was outstanding in
taking the 50 meters free title a fraction outside his own British
record
Jon decimated a very good international field in the 100 meters
backstroke with a final swim just one tenth of a second outside
his own world record and is looking stronger with every swim in
the event.
Not to be outdone Matt took gold in the 400 meters freestyle in
a time just short of his British record.
Phil Goldman said the three of them performed up to what I expected
and I have now given them a week off to recharge there batteries
before they start a 19 week training plan up to the Beijing date
with destiny
Newquay's Fox breaks world
record!
Jon & Matt Qualify for Beijing...
Newquay Cormorants' Jonathan Fox set a new world
record in the S7 100m backstroke on Thursday as he booked his
place at the Beijing Paralympics.
The 16-year-old swam in one minute 14.86 seconds
in his heat at the British Championships, adding to his record
in the S7 50m backstroke.
He went on to win the final, taking the British
title and a Paralympic place.
His coach Phil Goldman puts the record down
to the Great Britain training camp Fox attended in Australia in
January.
"It's a big step, but he's matured quite
a lot over the winter," Goldman told BBC Radio Cornwall.
Goldman added that Fox has only recently been
able to get strong enough to swim 100m backstroke since being
at the Gold Coast camp.
Fox's achievement caps a good few days for Cormorants
swimmers.
Matt Whorwood also qualified for Beijing in
the S6 400m freestyle event.
Whorwood is the second fastest in the world
this year and is another good prospect for a British medal.
