Major funding Boost!
£9450 lottery award from the Awards for All Lottery Fund

The Newquay Cormorants’ coach, Phil Goldman, has acquired a grant of £9450 towards a budget of £15000 from the Awards For All Lottery Fund.

The money will go towards a learn to swim and development programme that the Cormorants will be developing for disability and special needs children in partnership with Waterworld Leisure Centre

Phil said that it was an opportunity to develop further the clubs disability swimming programme and it was an exciting time for the development for swimmers that would find difficulty in accessing a development swim programme.

The funding is to establish over the coming year a programme that hopefully will be sustainable when the funding has been used .

Phil went on to say that the club is the leading group in the West for Disability development and at present we have 6 swimmers who are now regularly training, and would hope that we will reach our target of 10 swimmers able to train and compete .

The Cormorants at present have 3 swimmers who, in their classification, are World Record holders and are looking for medals at the Paralympics in Beijing in 2008. A further swimmer has competed at National level and 2 others are competing at Regional level.

D.S.E British Junior Swimming Championships at Sheffield

Newquay had 3 swimmers in action at the D.S.E British Junior Swimming Championships at Sheffield .The competition is for Juniors age up to 18 years old.

Matthew Whorwood and Jonathan Fox after their performances in the World Championships had little difficulty in disposing of the opposition at the British Junior Championships and went into the event as a train through making their target for peaking at the Senior Championships in May.

Jonathan took seven golds and Matthew six and never really had to extend themselves, but this year they were joined by 13 yr old Jessica Keats the third swimmer that Coach Phil Goldman has under his training programme for disabled swimmers
Jessica competed in the S5 and SB4 categories and performed outstandingly, winning gold in 3 events; the 50mts back, 100mts and 50 mts breast

Phil said Jessica is the third disabled swimmer the club has competing at National level and her training levels in the last 12 months have increased from 3 half hours a week to 2 two hrs and 3 one and a half hours giving her a total of over 8 hours per week and the increase is now showing in her performances. He went on to say the target is to get her up to the hours the two boys are doing, which is between 12 and 18 hrs per week.

If anyone feels they would like to get involved in the Newquay Clubs Disability Swim Programme age from 10yrs to 30yrs all you have to do is contact Phil at Waterworld.

and the Cormorants are looking for some big results from their well oiled team prep.

Matt and Jonathan selected to swim for the G.B.team!

Fresh from their fantastic performances at the I.P.C. World Swimming Championships Newquay Cormorants Duo of Matt Whorwood and Jonathan Fox have been selected to swim for the G.B.team in the Visa Paralympic World Cup which will be held in Manchester on May 12th.

Matt will be competing in the 200 I.M. 100 breaststroke and the 100mts freestyle.

Jonathan will be competing in both the 50mts and 100mts freestyle.

Both boys are delighted to be selected for the event in which the the male team of 10 swimmers that they are joining has 5 World Record holders. A very elite group indeed to be in a team with.

This is another massive vote of confidence from the selectors who stated that the boys were by far the biggest improvers at the World Champs.

Phil added "It will be a busy 2 weeks for the boys who will fly up to Manchester on the 11th May and will be up again in the North when the following week they are competing in the Senior International British Championships in Sheffield, for that event they will be joined by 13 year old team mate Jessica Keast who has made the Senior Championships for the first time."

Cornwall County Swimming Champs

The first session of the Cornwall County Swimming Championships took place at the Truro Pool and the event was for the 800mts female freestyle and 1500 mts male freestyle.

Newquay Cormorants started the Championships off in style when the 12yr old Natalie Harbisher smashed the competition age group record, winning the age group by 21 seconds from Holly Elliott of St Austell and a massive 36 seconds in front of third placed Kay De Courcy of Truro.

The young starlet proved her potential with a silver medal in the County Junior Championship and a bronze in the Senior Ladies Championship, a performance unequaled by one so young.

Natalie's sister Emily Harbisher who is too young to have an age group to compete in as she was only 10yrs old at the end of January, took a very good tenth place in the Junior Championship (under 16 ) and is certainly following in her sister's footsteps.

Newquay also picked up a silver medal in the Senior Ladies Championship from 17 yr old Lauren Woodfinden behind Truro's record breaker Natasha Diment and a bronze in the 13 yr old boys from Jarrod Benney in the 1500mts event.

Top performance went to 9 yr old Emily Harbisher who gained 5 golds from all the 200mts events on the programme, with new meet records in 4 of them. Emily was unbeatable and her performances have taken her to the top of the British 9 yr old rankings.
